52-run victory for Andhra

VISAKHAPATNAM, JAN. 4. Y. Venugopala Rao played another brilliant innings but missed century, M. S. K. Prasad struck a good knock, both shared a century stand, and medium pacer K. S. Shahabuddin once again proved himself as Andhra recorded a comprehensive 52-run win over Kerala in the K. S. Subbaiah Pillai trophy limited-over tournament round-robin match at Ukku Stadium here on Friday.
The victory also earned Andhra a bonus point, to take its tally to five, after it muffed up its match against Hyderabad on the previous day.
Kerala was set a target of 271 but its reply saw only opener M. P. Sorab (72, 4 x 5) making a big score. After opener Suresh was run out, medium pacer R. V. Ch. Prasad removed Kuduva and Sreekumar Nair. Venugopala Rao had Sorab caught by Amit. With four wickets down for 155, Kerala had to face the pace of Shahabuddin who removed four batsmen, with Venu affecting a run out in between. In the morning, Andhra after opting to bat first, lost Amit Pathak in the second over but Srihari added 70 runs with Prasad Reddy (35, 4 x 3, 63b) in 17 overs.
Andhra innings continued to flourish. Venugopala Rao took the score to 116 with Srihari and his 142-runs stand off 121 balls with captain M. S. K. Prasad, who scored a run-a-ball unbeaten knock of 82 (4 x 7) took the team to a comfortable total. Venu, all set to reach the three-figure mark was caught by M. P. Sorab off Sreekumar Nair. He slammed 91 runs hitting two 6s and eight 4s.
