Byelections likely in May

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI March 19. The byelections in the Saidapet, Vaniyambadi and Acharapakkam Assembly constituencies are likely to be held in May.

The final electoral rolls for these constituencies would be published on April 25, paving the way for the byelections either in the middle or at the end of May, Election department sources said here.

The three seats fell vacant following the death of V. Perumal, DMK MLA elected from Saidapet, Abdul Latheef, Indian National League leader, who represented Vaniyambadi, and A. Selvaraj of the Pattali Makkal Katchi from Acharapakkam.

Though the byelection in Saidapet and Vaniyambadi was initially scheduled to be held along with the poll in Andipatti on February 21, it was cancelled after the Election Commission Secretary, K.J. Rao, found largescale bogus inclusions in the draft rolls in the two constituencies.

A ``thorough'' fresh verification of the rolls has now been carried out and the list of inclusions and deletions would be made available at the Election Registration offices at Saidapet and Vaniyambadi tomorrow to April 3. Voters whose names have been deleted or included would be individually intimated by post, the State Election Officer, Mrtunjay Sarangi, said in a press release here.

Mr. Sarangi said the voters who received the individual notices might present the necessary documents to the Electoral Registration Officer to prove that they resided at the given addresses.

The draft for Acharapakkam has already been published along with the other 221 constituencies where door-to-door enumeration exercise was carried out as part of the nation-wide electoral roll revision.
