The demonstrators agreed to suspend their agitation on Saturday night following the intervention by the Superintendent of Police, N.Shivakumar, who reportedly promised them that the matter could be sorted out by discussing it with the Deputy Commissioner, Tushar Girinath, on Monday. The former Shimoga MP and President of the BJP district unit, Ayanur Manjunath, said Veerashaivas would resume the protest if their demand was not conceded. They demanded that the KPTCL immediately stop giving new power connections to the houses in the area. The MLC, B.S.Yediyurappa, and the MLA, H.M.Chandrasekharappa, who called on the agitators, appealed to them to hold their protest in a peaceful manner. Meanwhile, the Karnataka Vimochana Ranga (KVR) and the Civil Liberties Forum (CLF) have termed the demand of Veerashaivas "inhuman". In a joint statement here on Sunday, the Secretary of the KVR State unit, K.L.Ashok, and the President of the CLF district unit, K.P.Sripal, said the residents in the area had been residing there for the past several years. They said that any move to remove power connections was illegal, as the KPTCL had given power connections only after verifying the legal aspects involved in the procedure.
