Reeth, Swapna take day's honours

BANGALORE MAY 13. The 23rd National veterans athletics meet which got underway with 2,500 contestants in the fray, at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium here had the air of a mela rather than a serious competition. But then given their age, the commitment shown by veterans was exemplary. Some of them ran, vaulted and jumped their way in hot and humid conditions with verve. They certainly deserve the cheers.

The star attraction on the distaff side was Reeth Abraham, the former heptathlon international. Competing in the 35 + age group, Reeth swept to victory in the long jump and shot put events. Another notable performance came from Sapna Mondol of West Bengal , who in the 40 + section, won the 100m dash and long jump. In the 100 m race, Sapna beat the field and finished way ahead of her rivals in 14.6 seconds.

Syed Amir of Karnataka, fetched the host a lone gold in the men's section, winning 100m race in the 55 + section and R.L. Sharma, who is in mid 80s, won a gold in the 80+ section. Sudhir Katoch of Himachal Pradesh, won the 5 km walk in 21 minutes 56.3 seconds.

Discus throw: S.S. Maan (Raj). 36mtrs. 45 +: Jai Singh (Har) 35.77. 50 +: V.C. Visweakarma (Bhr) 37.36.

5 km walk: 40 +: Sunil Katoch (HP). 21:56.3 Samsher Singh (Har) 24:53.25.

Women: 100m: 35 +: Meena Singh (Del) 13.2. 40 +: Sapna Mondol (WB) 14.6. 45 +: Radha Krishnaswamy (TN) 14.1. 50 +: Anne Gonsalves (Mah) 16.0. 55 +: B. Topno (Bhr) 16.1. 60 +: Y. Sana Banabi Devi (Mpr) 17.7.
