Ponomariov loses to Beliavsky

CHENNAI JUNE 2. Ukrainian world chess champion Ruslan Ponomariov crashed to a shocking 0-2 defeat to former countryman, Alexander Beliavsky, now representing Slovenia, in the Russian World Chess Grand Prix at Moscow on Sunday. Ponomariov will now be left to fight for the ninth to 16th places.

In the bottom half of the draw, world No. 1 Garry Kasparov of Russia registered two wins over Frenchman Joel Lautier to maintain his all-win record and enter the quarterfinals of the 32-player tournament.

The results (round two): Ruslan Ponomariov (Ukr) lost to Alexander Beliavsky (Slv) 0-2, Alexey Dreev (Rus) lost to Ilya Smirin (Isr) 0-2, Teimour Radjabov (Aze) bt Vladimir Akopian (Arm) 2.5-1.5, Emil Sutovsky (Isr) lost to Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukr) 0.5-1.5, Evgeny Bareev (Rus) bt Alexander Onischuk (Ukr) 2-0, Rustam Kasimdzhanov (Uzb) lost to Alexander Khalifman (Rus) 0.5-1.5, Alexander Grischuk (Rus) bt Judit Polgar (Hun) 3-2, Joel Lautier (Fra) lost to Garry Kasparov (Rus) 0-2. — Our Chess Correspondent
