Crucial win for Saptarishi

By D. Ravi Shankar

BANGALORE July 24. Saptarishi Roy Choudary's decisive win over Himanshu Sharma in the penultimate round of the National Youth chess tournament gave him a realistic chance of grabbing the title. Saptarishi who has already played the top rated players should have a lower rated opponent from the computer-generated pairings for the final round.

Top seed Neelotpal Das's fifth draw in succession in the tournament shut out his chances for the title. He can at best finish runner-up after the final round. Neelotpal (2368) was held to draw by Valay Parikh (2269). The latter actually missing out on a number of potentially winning moves because of time pressure.

Saptarishi Roy Choudary of the Indian Railways was quickly in an overwhelming position in a game played along the Schvenegen Sicilian lines. In a game which was reminiscent of the Mitrakant vs Vishwanathan Anand match in Neyveli in 1988 which Mitrakant won (Anand was already winner of the tournament by then) Saptarishi Roy Choudary showed good judgment in offering a knight scarifice. Very soon Saptarishi was in a strong position and Sharma barely clinging on to his position. The ultimate win for Saptarishi could prove to be crucial in the title quest.

The results: K Ratnakaran (7.5) drew with Pankaj Joshi (7.5); Saptarishi Roy Choudary (8) bt Himanshu Sharma (6.5); Neelotpal Das (7) drew with Valay Parikh (7); Prathamesh mokal (7) drew with Sourabh Kherdekar (6.5); P. Rajesh (6.5) drew with Syed Anwar Shazuli (6.5); J. Ramakrishna (7) bt Prasenjit Dutta (6); Akash Tahkur (6) lost to Saptarishi Roy (7); D. Prabharan (6.5) bt Shashikanth Kutwal (5.5); Vinod Sharma (5.5) lost to Akshay Raj Kore (6.5); Biswajit Chatterjee (6) drew with H.D Jagadhish (5.5).
