Despatie poised to capture second gold

Manchester July 26. Alexandre Despatie was poised to claim his second Commonwealth Games gold in as many days on Friday after dominating the preliminary round of the men's 3m springboard competition.

The 17-year-old Canadian, who won the 1m springboard title on Thursday, led all five rounds of the preliminaries for a total of 234.99 points, with Australia's Matthew Helm lying second on 227.91 and Canadian Jeff Liberty third with 225.45.

The scores from the preliminary round - in which each diver must perform one dive from each of five types, forward, backward, reverse, inverse and twisting - were carried over into the final, in which divers have more scope for optional dives.

The finals could give Despatie a chance to separate himself even more with dives of a greater degree of difficulty.

Despatie, whose victory in the 10m platform at Kuala Lumpur at the age of 13 made him the youngest Games gold medallist, is seeking a diving treble this time around. After Friday's 3m he'll defend his platform title on Saturday.

Tony Ally, who gave England a silver medal in the 1m on Thursday, delighted fans at the Manchester Aquatics Centre by briefly putting himself in the silver medal spot before ending the morning in fourth position.

Helm performed consistently and finished with a superb reverse one and a half somersault with one-half twist to consolidate his second position. Liberty moved into third place on his fourth dive, an excellent inward with one and a half somersaults.

Canadian Myriam Boileau put herself in position to add a first gold to her cache of Commonwealth Games diving medals on Friday, leading the standings in the women's 10m platform after the preliminary round.

The 24-year-old from Montreal amassed 184.65 points from the four preliminary dives, which must be of specified types and may not exceed a set degree of difficulty.

The points were carried over into the finals, when divers had more leeway with their optional dives.

Boileau won a platform bronze at the Commonwealth Games at Victoria, Canada, in 1994. She improved to a silver in the event last time, and added a bronze in the 3m springboard.

All that's missing now from her Commonwealth collection is a gold. Australian Loudy Tourkey was lying second after the preliminaries with 176.97 points.

She shared second place with Boileau after the first dive, and moved into first place ahead of the Canadian on the second, on which they both did an inward 1 1/2 somersault.

But Boileau wrested the lead away with her third dive - a handstand - and extended it when she closed with a superb twisting dive.

English youngster Stacie Powell was third on 174.48. The 16-year-old moved into the medal placings with a confident handstand dive on her second dive and stayed there.

Canada's 1m springboard world champion Blythe Hartley, silver medallist in the 1m on Thursday, was fourth.

Australian Irina Lashko, winner of the 1m title, did not compete in the platform and will return to seek a second gold on Saturday in the 3m springboard.
