Protestors detain Chennai-bound train

By Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore Sept. 27. Leaders and workers of the Janata Dal (United) on Friday staged a dharna on the railway track at the Bangalore City Railway Station, and detained the Brindavan Express bound for Chennai for over 30 minutes in protest against the "failure" of the Union and Karnataka governments in safeguarding the interests of the State on the Cauvery issue. They were also protesting against the failure of the State Government to obtain the release of the former minister, H. Nagappa, who was kidnapped by the forest brigand, Veerappan, more than a month ago.

Among the demonstrators who were arrested were the State unit President of the JD(U), C. Byre Gowda, the former ministers, K.N. Nage Gowda and Vaijnath Patil, the Vice-President of the JD(U), C. Narasimhappa, the President of the Bangalore City unit of the party, R.V. Harish, and the MLC, M.P. Nadagouda.

Mr. Byre Gowda said the State Government, which had adopted a "soft approach" to obtain the safe release of the film actor, Rajkumar, two years ago, was now pursuing a different strategy. Despite the demand of the Opposition parties, the Government had not suspended the operations of the Special Task Force, he added. On the Cauvery issue, he said the Union Government had, without any basis, told the Supreme Court that the inflow into the Cauvery Basin reservoirs was 2.5 tmcft. a day, and the State Government told the Cauvery Monitoring Committee that it was ready to release 7,000 cusecs.

This had had resulted in the Supreme Court directive to release 1.25 tmcft. of water to Tamil Nadu on a daily basis, he added.
