This Day That Age
Journalist Manilal Gandhi, second son of Mahatma Gandhi, was sentenced to pay a fine of 50 sterling or in default to undergo 50 days' compulsory labour at Germiston on the 4th. He was found guilty, along with seven others, on charges arising out of a passive resistance procession. The prosecution said that the accused had behaved in a manner calculated to make Africans resist or contravene law, or to obstruct the administration of law by leading the procession of natives. At a public meeting in London, the repressive actions of the South African White regime were roundly condemned. Reverend Michael Scott, champion of the cause of the African natives, praised Mahatma Gandhi's doctrine of non-violence and passive non-cooperation. Rev. Scott observed that Gandhiji was the architect of the formula of passive non-violent resistance which had had a tremendous success in India, and which was then being applied in S.Africa where thousands of Africans and Indians had resolved to fight racial discrimination of the worst type. Canon Collins, Chancellor of St. Paul's Cathedral, said, "We are at a critical moment. The legitimate aspirations of Africans and Indians are being muffled by the S.African Government. The people are being treated and restricted in a manner against the dignity of man.
