In a pre-dawn swoop, the Narcotics Information Bureau sleuths raided a house at Chintadripet where the gang members were put up. The NIB men gained entry into the house posing as buyers.
The arrested were identified as Noor Batcha, a dismissed constable from Karur district, Fazal Mohammed of Sattankulam in Tuticorin district, Raju, an Irrigation department contractor and Nazeer, an accomplice. Three other persons were at large, the NIB police said.
A fake identity card of the department issued in the name of one Subramaniam was used by Fazal Mohammed to deceive narcotic buyers, said Sailesh Kumar Yadav, Superintendent of Police. When the police team, posing as buyers, approached them with the money, they flashed their fake identity cards and attempted to escape with the money.
The gang had its network spread across the State at Kodaikanal, Tiruchi, Nagercoil and Salem.
