India & World
A "very serious study" by the business community, trade organisations and the Foreign Office is required before taking a decision on granting MFN status to India, Mr. Khokhar said here at a seminar on "Global Economic Challenges: The Role of the Foreign Office". Though there was "no fixed view" on the matter, there was a need to look at the issue of trade with New Delhi objectively. He alleged that India had the most restrictive trade regime in the world. Referring to the coming South Asian Free Trade Area talks, he said it was imperative for the private sector and the Government to join hands and look at all aspects. "We are not afraid...(are) ready to do trade, but need to do our homework, need to keep our political considerations in view," Mr. Khokhar added.
Train ready
The Pakistan Railways has completed all arrangements for resumption of the Samjhauta Express to India, according to a report in the Associated Press of Pakistan. The train is ready to steam off for Atari railway station in India as soon as it gets the green signal from Islamabad. Reports quoting Pakistan railway sources said that platform number one in the Lahore railway station had been renovated while the coaches and locomotive were in operational condition and would be pressed into service as soon as the two countries decide to restore rail link. The track was in perfect condition as its maintenance was routinely ensured. PTI, UNI
