The Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, told Mr. Vajpayee that Karnataka was carrying on construction on the upper Tunga and Paragodu among others, for irrigation purposes in the name of drinking water projects. Addressing a press conference after his meeting, Mr. Naidu charged that Karnataka had made a different presentation to the Supreme Court and the Central Water Commission. He suggested that the Centre examine these documents in order and compare it with the Bachhawat award, which allocated sharing of Krishna river water among Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra, to know the truth. Citing instances of overdrawing of water by Karnataka through various projects, he said this had affected the districts of Anantapur, Cuddapah, Kurnool and Mehboob Nagar in Andhra Pradesh. These parts were also hit severely by drought. Mr. Naidu said he expected support from all parties, including the Congress, on the issue since it was in the interest of the State. He also expressed his willingness to meet the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, to discuss the problem. Referring to the visit of the Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, to India, Mr. Naidu requested the Prime Minister to allow Mr. Sharon to visit Kuppam, where some projects were going on with the help of Israel. On the request of the State Government to house the jewels of the Nizam of Hyderabad permanently in the city, Mr. Naidu said while Mr. Vajpayee had agreed in principle some time ago, questions were raised about security since there were objections to keeping them in the Salarjung Museum. A search was on for an alternate site, he said. Mr. Naidu also sought an early decision on the Afro-Asian Games. The State Government's suggestion to host the games at Hyderabad was considered favourably by Mr. Vajpayee earlier and the State has sought Rs.166 crores in this regard. He said since these games were scheduled to be held later this year, the decision should be expedited. During his stay, Mr. Naidu also met the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, the Union Finance Minister, Jaswant Singh and Union Sports Minister, Vikram Verma.
