'Cong. ready to face LS polls anytime'

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI AUG. 2. The Congress today dared the Bharatiya Janata Party to advance the Lok Sabha polls and hold them simultaneously with the Assembly elections to Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Mizoram and Delhi.

Responding to the suggestion of the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, for holding simultaneous polls to the Lok Sabha and the Assemblies, the Congress chief spokesperson, S. Jaipal Reddy, said: "If Mr. Advani is so keen on synchronising, his Government has the option to advance the Lok Sabha polls. Proof of the proposition lies in the political will and not loud thinking".

Mr. Advani's suggestion was typical of his style to indulge in "semi-academic speculation", he said adding that the issue was discussed neither by the National Democratic Alliance nor the Union Cabinet.

Even the Constitution Review Committee set up by the NDA Government had not looked into it.

"There is neither a legislative proposal nor a political proposition," Mr. Reddy said adding that Mr. Advani "keeps floating these trial balloons without following them up with concrete action".

The Congress, he said, was prepared to face the Lok Sabha polls whenever they came, separately or together with the Assembly elections.
