DMK protests newspaper report

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI AUG. 12. Members of the DMK today attempted to burn copies of a vernacular daily in parts of the city protesting a report, which raised a point about demolition of the Anna Samadhi, the MGR Samadhi and other structures housing restaurants on the Marina here. Claiming that the report had argued for demolition of the structures, the partymen gathered at various points with copies of the Tamil daily in the morning and attempted to burn them in full public view. Near the Anna statue on Royapettah High Road, Mylapore, about 25 cadres led by the Triplicane MLA, S.A.M.Hussain, were picked up by the police when they attempted to burn copies of the newspaper, said a DMK release.

At Saidapet, about 200 DMK members and the Youth Wing deputy secretary, M.Subramaniam, were detained when they attempted to burn the copies. They were lodged in the Saidapet police station. Similar protests were reported also from T.Nagar where about 100 partymen were detained, and from Chepauk, where about 50 members were picked up, according to the statement. Reports of protests were also received from various parts of North Chennai.

The partymen were released in the evening, the police said.
