The Hindu at 125: celebrations in Bangalore on Saturday

BANGALORE NOV. 5. As part of the 125th anniversary celebrations of The Hindu, a function is being held in Bangalore at Ambedkar Bhavan at 6 p.m. on Saturday, November 8, 2003. The Chief Minister of Karnataka, S.M. Krishna, will be the Chief Guest and he will deliver a commemoration address. The other guests of honour who will deliver special addresses are Jagadish Shettar, Leader of the Opposition, Karnataka Legislative Assembly, Azim H. Premji, Chairman and Managing Director, Wipro Limited, and Prof. U.R. Ananthamurthy, Chairman, Film and Television Institute of India, Pune, and writer.

Started by a group of six young Indians as a voice of Indian nationalism on September 20, 1878, with 80 copies, The Hindu today has grown into a major newspaper with a circulation of 9,33,000 copies. It is being printed at 11 centres including Bangalore and Mangalore in Karnataka and the organisation has an employee strength of 3,200.

The Hindu's 125th anniversary celebrations were inaugurated by the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, at a function in Chennai on September 13, 2003.
