More voters, lesser polling booths

JAIPUR NOV. 5. The number of voters in Rajasthan has increased by 37.21 lakhs from the previous Assembly elections in 1998. In all, over 3.39 crore voters will exercise their franchise next month.

The Chief Election Officer, Lalit Kothari, said here today that the highest number of 30.9 lakh voters were enrolled in Jaipur district, while Jaisalmer district in western Rajasthan had the lowest number of 2.19 lakh voters.

The 3,39,13,887 voters in the State comsist of 1.77 crore male and 1.62 crore female voters.

Mr. Kothari said electronic voting machines (EVMs) would be used in all the 200 Assembly constituencies this time, as against 39 constituencies in the 1998 elections. The EVMs were earlier also used in the tribal and backward areas during the Assembly by-elections.

Referring to the number of polling booths, Mr. Kothari said a total of 35,689 booths would be set up. Of them, 28,694 will be in the rural areas. The highest number of 2,895 polling booths will be in Jaipur district and the lowest, 363, in Jaisalmer. The number of booths will be 5,143 less than the previous elections.

The CEO said that as part of reconstitution of polling stations across the State during the past one year, arrangements had been made to set up one polling centre for a population of every 1,000 voters while ensuring that the voters do not have to travel beyond two km to reach the polling booth.
