Allahabad University to return to Centre's control

NEW DELHI NOV. 6. Nearly 30 years after it was deprived of its Central University status, the Union Cabinet today decided to bring the University of Allahabad back under its direct charge. The proposal to restore to Allahabad University its Central University status was mooted by its alumnus and the Human Resource Development Minister, Murli Manohar Joshi, in view of its national character.

As a consequence of the decision to take over the University, the Cabinet decided to pass a Central Act, release ad hoc grants and set up an Experts Committee to work out the actual academic, administrative and financial requirements that will go into granting the 116-year-old institution its old status.

This apart, the Cabinet also decided to convert the Bihar College of Engineering, Patna, into a fully Centrally-funded National Institute of Technology with a Deemed-to-be University status. As part of this decision, the Centre will meet the entire Plan and non-Plan expenditure of this institute which amounts to over Rs. 10 crores annually. With this, the number of NITs in the country has gone up to 18 as all the 17 Regional Engineering Colleges have opted for this year-and-a-half-old scheme to become a Deemed-to-be University under the Centre. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs today approved the continuance of the Centrally-sponsored scheme for restructuring and reorganising teacher education. The revised scheme will have a projected outlay of Rs. 950 crores during the Tenth Plan of which 95 per cent has been set aside for State-level activities.

The Ministry has pressed for the continuation of this scheme to meet the requirement of teachers needed for the successful implementation of the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan for universalising elementary education.
