In a joint press statement issued after the visit of the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Syria also welcomed the initiative taken by India to foster good-neighbourly relations with Pakistan. "Both sides condemned all acts of terrorism, of which they have been victim. Both delegations agreed that terrorism should not be linked to any religion and no attempt be made to tarnish any religion in the name of terrorism," the statement said. In a striking departure from protocol, the Syrian President, Bashar al-Assad, called on the Prime Minister at his hotel this morning.
