Digvijay Singh files criminal suit against Uma Bharti
By Our Staff Correspondent
BHOPAL
NOV. 17.
The Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Digvijay Singh, today filed a defamation suit against the Bharatiya Janata Party's chief ministerial candidate, Uma Bharti, for "launching a campaign to tarnish his image and levelling false, unwarranted and unsavoury allegations against him''.
Mr. Singh drove this morning to the Bhopal Chief Judicial Magistrate, N.S. Dixit's court along with his advocate, the former State Advocate-General, V.K. Tankha, and left the courtroom shortly before noon after filing a criminal suit against Ms. Bharti.
Mr. Singh later told reporters at a press briefing at his official residence that the criminal suit had been filed against Ms. Bharti in his personal capacity. He said this was not an election issue.
The suit filed on behalf of the Chief Minister draws attention to a press conference convened by Ms. Bharti and her party members on November 11 where "false, unwarranted and unsavoury allegations'' were levelled.
It said the accused was liable to be punished for causing defamation under Section 500 of the Indian Penal Code. The court admitted the plea and listed the hearing for December 15.
