This is for the first time the central trade union organisations have together called a strike. The companies whose employees will participate in the strike are the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, Indian Oil Corporation, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited. The call has been given irrespective of the affiliations of the trade unions to defeat the Government's policy, said the All-India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) general secretary, Gurudas Dasgupta. The move to partially disinvest mega oil companies such as IOC and ONGC would eventually pave the way for their privatisation.
