Oil workers' strike on December 16

By Our Staff Correspondent

NEW DELHI Dec. 10. Workers in the petroleum sector are to observe a 24-hour nation-wide token strike on Tuesday, December 16 to oppose what they call the Government's policy of privatising ``highly profitable and cash-rich'' oil companies.

This is for the first time the central trade union organisations have together called a strike. The companies whose employees will participate in the strike are the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, Indian Oil Corporation, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited.

The call has been given irrespective of the affiliations of the trade unions to defeat the Government's policy, said the All-India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) general secretary, Gurudas Dasgupta. The move to partially disinvest mega oil companies such as IOC and ONGC would eventually pave the way for their privatisation.
