SRINAGAR DEC. 10. Protest demonstrations, arrests and the holding of seminars marked the International Human Rights day in Kashmir today with the separatists alleging rights violations by government forces. The JKLF chairman, Mohammad Yasin Malik, and the Chairman of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, were among the dozens of persons arrested by police. Hundreds of people took out processions in the Maisuma and Rajbagh localities in the morning protesting against "violations of human rights'' in Kashmir. The JKLF leaders, Javed Mir and Bashir Bhatt, led a protest in Maisuma which turned violent when police tried to stop it. The protesters threw stones and police burst dozens of tear gas shells to quell the mob. Police later arrested Mr. Malik when he was coming out of his house. In Rajbagh area, Mr. Geelani was leading a procession towards the United Nations Military Observers Group office at Sonwar. When police stopped them resisted and lathicharge followed. Mr. Geelani and Ghulam Ahmed Gulzar were taken away by police.
