SENATE HOUSE RESTORATION &
150th YEAR OF UNIVERSITY OF MADRAS

also awarded Potential of Excellence by the University Grants Commission)
The first building of the University of Madras, built in the year 1873 is getting renovated. The inauguration of this historic heritage building is scheduled for January/February 2006 to coincide with the inauguration of 150th year celebrations of the University.

The renovation of this building, currently in progress, has been planned in ten stages. For the smooth timely progress of the renovation work Rs.6.0 Crores of funds are required. To hasten the process of renovation and maintenance of the Senate House, the "Senate House Trust" has been formed. When the Senate House has been restored to its former glory, Academic Convention and cultural extravaganzas it hosted earlier would also be restored. The funds will also be utilized for the maintenance of the Senate House.
