Malaviya's life and mission

MAALAVIYAJI KE SAPNON KAA BHAARAT: Iswara Prasad Varma-Editor; Arya Prakashan Mandal, IX/227, Saraswati Bhandar, Gandhinagar, Delhi-110031. Rs. 180.

THE NAME of Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya (1861-1946) shines as one of the chief leaders of the Indian National movement in its earlier phases. He presided over Indian National Congress sessions in 1908 and 1918. He was also a great champion of the Vedic way of life and the rights of the Hindus for whose welfare and progress he worked actively with the Hindu-Mahasabha from around 1926. He founded the Banaras Hindu University for which he collected money from princes and other patrons all over India. The establishment of this university, which has become a premier centre of learning with its extensive campus and colleges, playgrounds, hostels and the temple of Visvanatha centrally located in it, was his greatest life-time achievement.

This book is a collection of opinions, essays and extracts of writings on Malaviya's life, mission and achievement by eminent persons including leaders like Rajendra Prasad, Jawaharlal Nehru, Mahatma Gandhi, Annie Besant, Purushothamdoss Tandon, Maithili Saran-Gupta and Lalbahadur Shastri. It has five parts including selections from Malaviya's own speeches and writings. The selections from various writers have been well chosen and made representative, but we miss mention of their sources. This information would have added to their authenticity as extracts.
