The ideal place is the Institute of Hotel Management, Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition established by the Union Ministry of Tourism.

IHM’s flagship course is the Bachelor of Science in Hotel Management, a three-year regular programme that combines an extensive curriculum embedded with on-the-job training that helps the students to compete with the best in the business. The B.Sc degree is jointly awarded by the National Council of Hotel Management and Catering Technology (NCHM) (Email: nchm@vsnl.com), an autonomous body of the Ministry of Tourism which ensures coordinated growth and development of hospitality education in the country, and the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) ( www.ignou.ac.in).

Students having completed or appearing for their Pre-University /10+2 /H.S.C/AISSCE/ or equivalent are eligible. During the months of January and February announcements are made for the programme in leading newspapers. All applicants will be required to appear for an all-India joint entrance examination (April) conducted by NCHM.

Candidates shortlisted by NCHM will be required to appear for an interview (May-June) at centres all over the country. Successful candidates qualify for admission in any one of the institutes depending on overall ranking in the written test and interview.

IHM Bangalore ( www.ihmbangalore.com) offers the following that would benefit those who have an inclination to join the hospitality sector which is ever growing and offers quality employment worldwide:

Master of Science, two-year programme in Hospitality Administration.

Post-Graduate Diploma in Accommodation Operations.

Certificate Course in Food Production.

Certificate Course in Food and Beverage Services.

The Government of Karnataka, in association with ICICI, established the Institute of Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology ( www.ibab.ac.in). With the involvement of leading academic institutes and industry, IBAB aims to attain high standards in bioinformatics and biotechnology education, research and entrepreneurship. IBAB has created a niche for itself in a short span of time. It can be contacted at: G-05, Tech Park Mall, International Technology Park, Whitefield Road, Bangalore-560 066.

IBAB conducts a six-month laboratory course in bio-techniques. The objectives are:

To train life science students and professionals in laboratory techniques. The techniques include extraction and purification of bio-molecules (DNA, RNA and proteins), electrophoresis, PCR, blotting, recombinant DNA technology, cell culture.

To provide exposure to several other advanced techniques such as DNA sequencing, micro-arrays, use of transgenic animals and monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies.

To teach related professional skills such as basic computer usage, verbal and written presentations, record keeping, safety and maintenance aspects, group discussion, literature search, bioinformatics and statistical methods.

To increase the dependability of the participant. This is done by (a) analysis of variation in experimental results and the probable causes, (b) creating awareness about variations and pitfalls in basic procedures and (c) exercises of trouble shooting during experiments. Many experiments have to be carried out by the students entirely on their own once the protocol is given.

Promoting group work and team spirit in the students. Several assignments and experimental designs encourage students to interact and cooperate with each other during the course.

To increase the competence of the students through small research projects towards the end of the course.

Change of career

I have completed MBA in 2003 from a University in Karnataka. I have three years’ experience in the field of marketing but am thinking of a career either in academics or HR. I have received offers from a management institution to become a Lecturer and Placement Officer. What would be my career prospects? Would it be possible to pursue Ph.D. as well? I have also completed Master’s in HRM/HRD from Annamalai University by correspondence mode.

It has been observed that an individual who has seen the corporate life is well suited to become a teaching faculty in any B-school of standing. The corporate experience will always help in generating information and help one to understand the nuances of the functioning of the industry.

Being a marketing professional, your communication skills will also be on the better side. Teaching in a nutshell is how you pass on information to the learner. Your career prospects will be good even in the academic arena.

From a Lecturer you could go on to become a Reader and Professor. Qualifying in the NET conducted by the University Grants Commission will be a great advantage, as this provides you a licence to teach.

Pursuing M.Phil or Ph.D. will help you to understand the nuances of the subject you are specialising in. Attending short-term programmes in leading B-schools meant for management teachers will also help. Your trump card is your advantage of having worked in the corporate world.
