The Department of Mechanical Engineering of Amrita School of Engineering inaugurated the collegiate chapter of the Society of Automotive Engineers India. S.Raju, Senior Deputy Director, Automotive Research Association of India, chief guest, gave a talk on “The Automotive Industry in India and the R and D Trends.” An aero-show was held in addition to an interactive technical presentation on aero-modelling. A collection of vintage cars was also on display.

The Sankara Institute of Management Science organised a one-day seminar on “Services Marketing.” P.R.Muthusamy, Dean of Kovai Medical Centre and Hospitals, the chief guest, stressed the basic concept of health, relationship inventory, updating career goals, financial discipline and execution of goals. He said the health care sector offered a lot of opportunities for the management graduates.

The Department of Computer Science of P.S.G.R Krishnammal College for Women organised a community development programme at Kittampalayam. Various speakers encouraged women to break free of the restrictions society imposed upon them. Health issues including personal hygiene were also discussed. They were also given an induction into yoga.

As part of the Valar Kavi Thittam, which covers 350 districts in India including 29 districts in Tamil Nadu, the NSS unit of the Sri Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya College of Arts and Science organised an awareness rally in Mettupalayam. The NSS volunteers of Kumaran College, Pioneer College, R.V.College and V.N.K. College for Women also took part in the rally.

Integration of bio-technical tools in the conventional breeding programmes is essential to improve productivity and sustain the growing demand for agricultural products, M.Surya Prakash, Director of Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding, recently. He was inaugurating the winter school on “Application of Molecular Tools for Crop Improvement” at the Sugarcane Breeding Institute. He observed that the recent advances in molecular biology had opened up new vistas in crop improvement and have started yielding results.

The Placement Cell of the Forest College and Research Institute, Mettupalayam, organised a self-development programme for UG and PG students. M.Thangaraj, Director of Students Welfare, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, spoke on soft skills for career development. K.S.Subramanian, professor, Students Welfare, gave a special lecture on “Overseas Education and Employment.”

A two-day workshop on advanced topics on “Protein-Ligand Interactions using Autodock 3 Suite” was held at the Dr.G.R.Damodaran College of Science. More than 60 participants from various colleges and universities participated. The objective of the workshop was to motivate the young students to create new drugs for diseases, which would be useful for students.

The Malayalam Department of Nehru College of Arts and Science released its magazine, ‘Sameeksha,’ recently. Vaishakan, Malayalam writer, released the first issue. He stressed the importance of innovation in his inaugural address. Thinking differently was literary creativity. He urged students to read more.

More than 100 units of blood were donated by volunteers of the NSS unit of Karunya University at a blood donation camp. The camp was organised in connection with the 45th birth day celebrations of Dr.Paul Dhinakaran, educationist, and Founder Pro Chancellor of Karunya University.

A medical team from the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital collected blood (143 units) from more than 150 NSS volunteers. Anne Mary Fernandez, Vice Chancellor in charge and Joseph Thomas, Registrar inaugurated. Franklin, NSS Co-ordinator, was also present.

The Department of Commerce of SNMV Arts and Science College conducted a Talents Day. The objective of the programme was to bring out the inherent talents of the students. R.S.Dhananjayan, special officer, Planning and Development Cell, Bharathiar University, was the chief guest. He highlighted the importance of teacher-student relationship at college level. He also requested the teaching faculty to mould the students and make them responsible citizens.

The department of Commerce of Sri Krishna Arts and Science College organised a ‘Video-Ad Round.’ Students presented their advertisements on various topics such as insurance, hospitals, educational institutions, banking, tourism marketing and railways. Omkar V.Sankar, of Sankar Foundation, Coimbatore addressed the gathering. He spoke about the significance of branding and the essential features of marketing and advertising a product.

VLB Janakiammal College of Arts and Science recently inaugurated its Entrepreneur Club. About 860 students have become its members. Laura Parkin, Executive Director, National Entrepreneurship Network, was the chief guest. Skill building, networking, and mentoring will be some of the activities of the club. It will also cover issues such as venture capital and intellectual property.

Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College and Sri Ramakrishna College of Arts and Science for Women jointly organised a two-day workshop on ‘Mind Power and Success Formula’ at Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College. T.Raghunath, Director of the organisation ‘Relax,’ conducted the workshop. The workshop discussed the art of learning, brain activation, mind relaxation, permanent memory, fear and tension and power speaking.

CMS Institute of Management Studies conducted ‘Awakening,’ a residential personality development programme at the Karl Kubel Institute of Development Education, Anaikatti. The programme, conducted every year is aimed at the holistic development of the student’s physical, mental and spiritual faculties. Rajani Kant Gupta, Commissioner of Income Tax, Coimbatore, was the chief guest for the inaugural function. He spoke about the importance of having a compet itive spirit and highlighted that even with scarce resources it was the duty of the manager to see that the work was done.

The Chemistry Department of Karunya University organised a one-day national seminar on ‘Recent Developments in Green Chemistry.’ P.Maruthamuthu, Vice Chancellor of Madurai Kamaraj University, inaugurated the seminar. He highlighted the need for clean water, clean air, and a clean environment for adopting green strategies for chemistry. Hazardous chemicals and solvents should not be used. Maintaining an eco-friendly environment was essential for the health of th e people in the country, he added.

The Department of Social Work of Karpagam Arts and Science College recently inaugurated the association activities for the current year. V.Balasubramaniam, Director, Avinashilingam Jan Shikshan Sansthan, was the chief guest. He spoke about the role of non-Governmental organisations (NGOs) in national development. He motivated the students to start NGOs and address social problems. He also spoke about the need to work in the community and bring an attitudinal change in the people for national development.

The NSS unit of Maharaja Arts and Science College, Neelambur, organised a blood donation camp recently. N.Venugopal, NSS programme officer, C.Loganathan, principal of the college and N.Balaji, Programme Officer of the Youth Red Cross, participated.
