BPO Management candidates get placement

Bharathidasan University (BDU), which pioneered the concept of offering a structured training programme of six-month duration in Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) through its Institute for Entrepreneurship and Career Development (IECD) has also ensured placement for most of the candidates.

IECD inked a pact with the New Delhi-based Chauhan Knowledge Process Management Limited (CKPML) late last year paving the way for the latter to devise the contents and conduct the six-month training programme in BPO Management and a three-month programme in Call Centre Management.

Eighty of the 95 candidates who took up the programme in BPO Management have been offered placements by eight companies including First Source, T.N. Info System, Sutherland, and Global Dot Com.

The candidates would be offered free accommodation and specialised training for a fortnight in Tiruchi, Chennai, Coimbatore and Bangalore before being absorbed into BPO jobs with salaries ranging between Rs. 5,000 and Rs. 17,000 a month.

IECD organised a passing out ceremony last week when vice-chancellor M. Ponnavaikko handed over the offer letters to the students.

Entrepreneurship

For the convenience of the remaining candidates, most of whom had expressed their intention to start their own BPO units, the university has decided to offer a month-long training in entrepreneurship. According to the vice-chancellor, there is potential for entrepreneurship through facilitating e-governance initiatives in villages, and e-commerce and e-education.

Though a pass in Plus-Two is the minimum eligibility for joining these programmes, 12 diploma holders, 57 bachelor degree holders, 23 post graduates had enrolled for the programme, said K. Parthasarathy, IECD Director.

The BPO sector is here to stay, having expanded its ambit to provide service to manufacturing, finance, telecom and various other sectors. The BPO industry accounts for $13.8 million a year and the workforce requirement would increase exponentially in the coming years, said Srikanth Gummalla, Chief Executive Officer, CKPML.
