UGC status: Telangana varsity students cry foul

P. RAM MOHAN

The University authorities reportedly did not apply for recognition due to lack of faculty

The newly-started Telangana University not getting recognition of University Grants Commission is a matter of concern for many students in the varsity.

Students and different student unions express dismay at the news that the TU did not get UGC recognition, while Nannayya University, Rajahmundry, and Yogi Vemana University, Kadapa, which were set up along with this varsity figure in the list of recog nised universities.

‘Discriminated’

They feel nothing is needed more than this to say as to how the region is being neglected by the Government. Even some of the student organisations held protest demonstrations on the varsity premises and submitted memoranda to Vice-Chancellor Kasiram and Registrar T.L.N. Swamy to speed up the process for getting recognition.

Contacted by The Hindu, the Registrar Prof. Swamy said the varsity has now got all eligibilities to get the recognition from the UGC.

However, the varsity did not apply for it while waiting to fulfil all set conditions, he says.

Official’s take

“We are ready to submit the application under the Section 2F of the UGC this week. We will also apply to the Indian Universities Association and to the Bar Council as the varsity has also launched law courses in its College of Law,” he said.

The varsity introduced seven new courses this year taking the total number of courses being offered to 13.

The number of seats in each course offered in the university has also been increased from 30 to 50.

It has computer, botany and pharmaceutical labs and two integrated Post Graduate courses in Applied Economics and Pharmaceutical Chemistry.

However, it is said lack of faculty is a major handicap for the varsity not applying for the recognition since all details regarding number of faculty members and syllabus are to be mentioned in the form.
