Demand for IIT/IIEST status for AUCE still alive
G. NARASIMHA RAO
Demand for establishing an IIT in the city or upgrading the Andhra University College of Engineering to the status of IIT or IIEST is pending for a long time and no effort is being spared by the administration or the locals to remind the Centre at frequent intervals of the need to have an institution of this status in the city.
Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy’s announcement after his return from New Delhi late last week that IIT at Medak would start functioning in a few months only makes the locals more vociferous with their demand for a similar institution here. To ensure their quota of seats at the AUCE when it is upgraded as a National institution, the State Government asked the Union Ministry of HRD to allot 50 per cent of seats to AP candidates. The present number of seats available to the locals can be retained if the intake is doubled. The State Government also wanted the centre to allow the number to be doubled.
So far, there is no response to this proposal and one hopes the state Government pursues its proposal with the Centre and get the AUCE upgraded or a new IIT established here. Andhra University might be one of the oldest universities in the country and enjoys a good reputation but it is the only major educational institution in the north coastal Andhra region, which needs another major institution considering its backwardness.
