College conducts study on vultures
Coimbatore, the Nilgiris and Erode districts do not have even a single vulture, according to a study conducted by The Kongunadu Arts and Science College. According to a release, K. Vediyappan and R. Roobha, M.Sc. students of the Zoology Department, conducted a six-month study on the ‘Depletion of Vulture Population in South India’ under the guidance of M. Lekeshmanaswamy, Senior Lecturer.
The dead body-eating Indian vulture (gyps bengalensis) has been dwindling in numbers in south India due to various reasons. The number of this endangered species is gradually coming down due to global warming, cyclones, shooting to avoid air accidents, heavy use of diclofenac to livestock, low reproductivity capacity, non-availability of carcasses, predation and other ecological disturbances.
The very few that are surviving can be found in north India. The study has made various recommendations including establishment of in-situ and ex-situ conservation and breeding stations in India.
