Q & A

The thrill never fades in this job

I am a software engineer with a CMM Level 4 company. I want to have a career in SAP. Please provide the details of the programmes on offer and the institutes which run them.

K.M. Patil

via Email Bangalore

It is ill-advised to approach any university or institute for System Application Protocol (SAP) ( www.sap.com) training, when Bangalore plays host to the SAP training facility. SAP, the world’s leading provider of business software solutions, started its operations in India in 1996. Headquartered in Bangalore, SAP India also has offices in Mumbai and New Delhi.

Over 3,000 employees of SAP in India are engaged in collaborative software engineering that facilitates the delivery of innovative business solutions across Research & Breakthrough Innovation, Product and Technology Development, Production, Global Services & Support, Sales Support, and Customer Solutions & Operations. The centre, an integral part of SAP’s global development network, focuses on key areas such as ERP, CRM, SRM, Net Weaver, Globalisation, Emerging Solutions, Custom Development, Active Global Support, and Installed Base Maintenance.

You should get in touch with SAP India Private Limited, Vaswani Victoria, 30, Victoria Road, Bangalore-560 047. Ph: 41365555. Fax: 41365550.

I am pursuing graduation and am enamoured of airlines and airlines management. Please highlight the areas of focus that are available in this field.

Kiran Kumar

From 1991 the airlines sector has grown rapidly, offering a wide range of jobs. The areas that one can pursue are:

Pilots: The pilots are the face of any airline. In fact, the need for pilots in India and around the world is ever on the increase.

Engineers: These are the ground personnel who watch every movement of the aircraft while on land. These are the invisible housekeepers.

In-flight Executives: They are another set of professionals who have brought about the success of many airlines. In private airlines, there is a specific period for them to function and accrue of the benefits before being moved to ground functions.

Guest Relations Executives: They support the passengers on the ground and ensure their comfort before they board the aircraft.

Plan well and see to it that you get to the best of programmes that will help you to reach the top echelons of aviation management.

I am working for a leading ITES company. I want to pursue MBA from a good business school. The course of ISB, Hyderabad, has been attracting a lot of talent and placements. What are the parameters for joining ISB?

Monish C. Mathur

IIMs and other business schools are a great source of attraction for many of the Indian citizens. In fact, the world also has recognised the contribution of IIMs in the genre of business schools that have become centres of excellence. The Indian School of Business ( www.isb.edu ), Hyderabad, which has on its board the who is who of the corporate world, has created a niche for itself. The vision of ISB is worth noting: to become an internationally top-ranked, research-driven, independent management institution that grooms future leaders for India and the world. ISB provides admission to graduates with work experience. Irrespective of the job that one has held or the industry that one has worked in, the applicants who have the results of GMAT and CAT are eligible to apply for the one-year Post-Graduate Programme. The academic credentials and performances are also looked into. ISB has given admission to those who have demonstrated leadership qualities in the organisation where they have worked. At ISB one can juxtapose theory and practice and come out successful and join the corporate world with élan.

Besides visiting the website, you should visit the sprawling campus which is a temple of learning and knowledge management. B-schools should take the cue from ISB and get to the nuances of business as a science and take it to the desired levels of success.

Does Bangalore University offer Post-Graduate courses in Tourism?

Ravi Prakash

via Email Nanjangud

The Department of Commerce offers the Master of Tourism Administration (MTA), a two-year programme, for graduates. You can enrol directly with the Department that is located in Central College, Bangalore.

The University also has affiliated colleges which offer the MTA programme. Christ College (autonomous) ( www.christcollege.edu) also offers the course which has created a niche for itself in a short period for the inputs that are provided and of course the placements that are on offer.

I plan to admit my daughter to a course in Mass Media. Please give information on colleges in Bangalore and other cities which offer it.

Mass media reaches out to and influences large numbers of people through the tools of newspapers, popular magazines, radio and television. It is a means of communication that is technologically capable of reaching to most people and in an affordable manner. So being part of mass media, one can provide information and inputs that would help in the creation of an opinion, an opinion that would usher in change. As far the talents are concerned, one should be creative and have an inclination to put in long hours of work, besides empathise with the happenings in society.

You could contact the following institutes for more information on programmes in Mass Media:

Convergence Institute of Media, Management and Information Technology Studies (COMMITS). Ph: 25530923 or email: commits@gmail.com

Manipal Academy of Higher Education ( www.manipal.edu), Madhav Nagar, Manipal-576 119. Email: admissions@manipal.edu

Indian Institute of Mass Communication ( www.iimc.nic.in) (IIMC), an internationally renowned centre for training and research in Mass Communication. It is an autonomous body funded by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and has a campus in New Delhi. Karnatak University, Dharwad, and other Universities in Karnataka too offer programmes which will help you in achieving your goal.
