Bag a scholarship, study in U.K.

M.P. PRAVEEN

Studying abroad can be a very expensive affair. But to the enterprising, a number of scholarships are in the offing.

Finance — the word sums up the first and foremost concern of every student aspiring for higher studies, especially those wishing to fulfil their academic dreams abroad.

The United Kingdom, home to over 120 universities offering thousands of courses in various streams, attracts a large number of students from across the globe annually, not the least from India.

Though a majority of the students pay for the courses out of their pockets, education can be a costly affair for many a student. For them, the only recourse is to rely on scholarships or grants. The British Government and a host of other organisations across the U.K. offer scholarships and awards ensuring that talented students did not lose out simply because they could not muster enough funds to back up their ambitions.

Handy resource

The British Council’s website, www.britishcouncil.org.in/scholarships, serves as a handy resource in this context, describing the various scholarships available to international students and the ways to utilise them.

Basically two types of scholarships are on offer — for master’s/postgraduate courses lasting one to two years and for doctoral research such as Ph.D, D.Phil. and postdoctoral studies.

Scholarships are either administered by or through the British Council or are funded by various U.K. organisations on their own. In some cases, the institutions offer direct scholarships.

Prominent among the scholarships routed through the British Council is the British Chevening Scholarship Programme available for one-year master’s and short-term specific professional programmes in selected fields. Chevening is the U.K. Government’s flagship scholarship aimed at producing future leaders, opinion formers and decision-makers.. The theme for Chevening 2008 is Leadership.

Plan in advance

As R. Nim Bahadur, Manager Education U.K. (South India) of the British Council, puts it, the key to enjoy the benefits of scholarship is to plan in advance, at least a year ahead.

Gurukul Chevening Scholarship for Leadership and Excellence funds Gurukul, a 12-week advanced leadership programme created for India’s future leaders by the London School of Economic and Political Science.

Each year 12 exceptional Indian men and women are selected for participation in an intensive programme. Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan enables Indians to pursue various master’s, doctoral, academic and professional fellowship programmes in the U.K. The programme is managed jointly by the Association of Commonwealth Universities in the U.K., the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the British Council.

MHRD invites applications for scholarships and the UGC for fellowships once a year. Details are available on the websites www.education.nic.in and www.ugc.ac.in

The other scholarships offered through the British Council are the Charles Wallace India Trust Awards, Scottish International Scholarships, International Young Music Entrepreneur of the Year, De Souza Trust Goa Scholarship and UKIERI Ph.D Scholarships.

There are more than two dozen scholarships funded by various U.K. organisations. The list includes Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme ( www.csfp-online.org/hostcountries/uk/sss/index.html), Shell Centenary Chevening Scholarships ( www.shell.com/scholarships), FCO/British Gas International/University of Strathclyde Joint Scholarship ( www.strath.ac.uk/igo), Nottingham Developing Solutions Joint Chevening Scholarships ( www.nottingham.ac.uk./prospectuses/postgrad), UNEP-WCMC Chevening Scholarships in Biodiversity-postgraduate studies ( www.unep-wcmc.org), Hansard Research Scholars Programme
