Sharing knowledge: A.S. Rao, Department Head, Biotechnology, Bharathidasan University, and C.W. Choi, Department Head, Biology and Medical Science, Pai Chai University, Republic of Korea, exchanging an MoU.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the heads of the Department of Biotechnology, Bharathidasan University, and the Department of Biology and Medicinal Science, Pai Chai University, Republic of Korea, recently for exchange of postgraduate students and Ph.D scholars of biotechnology of both the sides to pursue their research work. The MoU was signed during the recent visit of the Head, Department of Biology and Medicinal Science, C. W. Choi, and Dean, Fac ulty of Science, Pai Chai University, Kim, to Bharathidasan University. The Head of the Department of Biotechnology of Bharathidasan University, A. S. Rao, and Mr. Choi signed the MoU.

Pai Chai and Bharathidasan universities will also exchange regular faculty members of biotechnology to undertake collaborative research. The MoU, signed at the initiative of the vice-chancellor, Bharathidasan University, M. Ponnavaikko, will also try to establish a Korean language centre in Bharathidasan University. A. Ganapathi of Bharathidasan University who is now in Korea as a visiting professor played a key role in bringing the two sides together for the MoU, a press release of the university said.

The Rotaract Club of Anbil Dharmalingam Agricultural College of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University conducted a motivation programme to benefit the students. Former vice-principal of St. Joseph’s College, G. Balakrishnan, made the session interesting through an interactive discussion on personality development. He gave useful tips to students to improve physical, moral, emotional and intellectual capabilities. The Dean of the College, S. Jeyaraman, spoke on the import ance of personality development as a key to career progression. The Staff Advisor, G. Gajendran, the student president of Rotaract Club, S. Adalarasan, were among those who spoke.

Over 300 students attended the preliminary round during the campus interview conducted by Google, a top multinational company, at Holy Cross College in the city recently. The students selected have been called to attend the rest of the rounds, according to the Department of Human Resource Development of Holy Cross College, which organised the campus interview. During the last year, Google selected five students from Tiruchi. Of them four were the students of Holy Cross Col lege.

The Department of Human Resource Development of the college has been regularly conducting on-campus and off-campus interviews and about 450 students were successfully placed last year in various top multinational concerns such as Infosys, Wipro, CTS, Emphasis, First Source and Slash Support.

The Department of English of Chidambaram Pillai College for Women, Manachanallur, organised a workshop on ‘personality development and communication’. The faculty, Department of English, Periyar E. V. R. College, K. S. Dhanam, was the chief guest. She interacted with the students on various factors that builds one’s personality and stressed on “improving and improvising”. During the interaction session, Prof. Dhanam gave vital tips focussing o n personality traits, effective communication and getting rid of inferiority complex. Educational advisor K. Sekar presided over the meeting and the Dean, English Department, V. Krishnamoorthy, and lecturer A. Rizwana Sulthana offered felicitations.

Under the auspices of the Department of Computer Science of the College, a seminar on Midlet programming was held. The faculty, Department of Computer Science, St. Joseph’s College, M. S. Ravindran, who was the chief guest, explained Midlet programming and its applications, citing various examples.

J. Haseena Begum, Counsellor, Drug Addiction and Rehabilitation Centre, was the resource person at the awareness programme conducted by the Department of Social Work of the College at the Government Hr. Sec. School, Pulivalam.



Youth power: At the Youth Day celebrations at Trichy Engineering College, Tiruchi.

The Professor of Management, Pondicherry University, Puducherry, S. Hariharan, delivered a special lecture on the topic ‘impact of globalisation on employment opportunities to Commerce graduates’ under the auspices of the Commerce Association (women section) of Jamal Mohamed College. Dr. Hariharan explained the various sectors in which the services of women Commerce graduates are needed. Banking, finance, insurance and other service sectors have plenty of job o pportunities for B. Com. and M. Com. students. Students should become employable by developing communication skills and software knowledge.

The Head of the Department of Commerce, Nehru Memorial College, Puthanampatti, S. Rajagopal, also explained the demand for company secretaries who have passed accounts examination and urged the students to take advantage of the course offered. Principal M. Sheik Mohamed felicitated the students who had secured top university ranks. College secretary Abdul Gafoor and treasurer Kaleel Ahamed distributed certificates to the meritorious students. The vice-president of the Association, Hena Kowsar, offered felicitations.

The Jamal Social Work Association of Jamal Mohamed College organised an interactive session on ‘child rights: issues and challenges’. The Adviser, Save the Children, A. Sivakami, was the chief guest. She urged the government, parents and teachers to come forward to protect the rights of the children.

CSE & IT Department of Trichy Engineering College celebrated the Youth Day. The Training and Placement officer, Trichy Engineering College, Shanmuganathan, emphasized the fact that age is not an indicator of being young, it is only the hard work with sincerity that determines how youthful a person can be. Registrar R. Somasundaram also spoke. To bring an awareness on Swami Vivekananda, an elocution competition was conducted.

Prizes were distributed to the winners of the elocution contest, A. Karthikeyan and Annisteffi. The Professor and Head of the department, K. Rajeswari, offered felicitations.
