ICFAI summit on higher education

Bringing together academic leaders to generate contemporary thought and share opinion in the context of far reaching changes taking place in the economy and their impact on career opportunities, the ICFAI University organised a higher education summit.

The summit, which was inaugurated by Subhash Sarnikar, Chancellor of the University, and was attended by heads of 42 leading educational institutions from across the country.

Prof. Sarnikar said that roots of our higher education system lie in the past requirements of the colonial structure and we seem to have got stuck to it. Any attempt to reform or modify is met with tremendous resistance. The resistance is sometimes at the instance of vested interests.

Mismatch

He felt that as a consequence of this there is a need to find a way to address the mismatch between what employers need and what educational institutions produce, both in terms of quality and numbers.

He said it was for the leaders in academic field to take closer look at various issues such as quality of higher education, in terms of delivery mechanisms, reliable valuation, teacher education and regulatory frame work.

Role of academics

He said academics had a responsibility in initiating and implementing the needed changes within their capacity and collectively influencing and shaping the environment for effecting changes for better tomorrow.

B.S. Raghavan, former bureaucrat analysed the report of the National Knowledge Commission and the implications of its recommendation in an interactive session.

O.P. Gupta, Director, IBS, Gurgaon; K.P. Chinda, Campus Head, IBS, Noida and Manas Chakravarty, the Programme Director of the summit also spoke on the occasion.

The summit served as a forum for exchanging ideas and networking with other participants.
