“More women must aim for management positions”
Plenary sessions on ‘Women in Management’ and ‘Creating an Entrepreneurial Spirit-Opportunities and Challenges’, and a workshop on ‘Leadership’ were the highlights of Athenaeum ’08, the second international conference on Management Research, organised by the Centre for Contemporary Management Research, the research wing of the Bharathidasan Institute of Management (BIM), in Tiruchi recently.
The session on Women in Management had Pamela Ramalingam, director, iSoft Technologies; Lalitha Natraj, Head, Special Projects, Business Intelligence Unit, ICICI Bank; Uma Baskaran, Assistant vice-president, AXIS Bank, and N. Manimekalai, director, Centre for Women Studies, Bharathidasan University, as participants.
While appreciating the large participation of women in various fields, they were concerned that only two per cent of women occupied management positions. They felt women were not adequately exposed to the challenges and opportunities in the corporate world and wanted career-oriented women to realise their potential by shedding inhibitions and becoming emotionally strong. The panellists said some sacrifices were inevitable in the process of making progress in career. Trust is a must in double income families for women to excel in their careers, they emphasised.
K.G. Muralidharan, managing director, G.K. & Sons; T.K. Sreedhar, chairman and managing director, Novellsys Technologies; Ashok Kumar, chief executive officer, MAA Integrators, and P.M. Austin, chief executive officer, Max Value Learning Technologies and Consulting, were the participants of the session on ‘Creating an Entrepreneurial Spirit-Opportunities and Challenges’. According to them, in the current situation, finance is easily available for those with a deep desire to transform ideas into action.
Conducting the workshop on ‘Leadership’, C. Mahalingam, executive vice-president, Symphony Services Corporation, the corporate can no longer showcase their performance based on Return on Investments but only on Return on Intangibles.
Research papers
The conference accepted over 120 research papers on all functional streams of management, including a handful on Entrepreneurship and Family Business Management. Of these, 58 papers were selected by a peer committee. The BIM has decided to bring out select papers in the form of an edited book.
