CAMPUS JOTTINGS

Total concentration on NAAC team’s visit

G. NARASIMHA RAO

The major happening in Andhra University campus is the administration’s total concentration on facing the National Assessment and Accensure that all that is required by the committee is in place and to motivate the teachers and student further to ensure the top grade this time. When it is expected on the part of teachers to join the efforts, it is learnt that some teachers in some departments are not even present when the VC visited their departments. There are also reports that there are discrepancies in awarding marks as per the performance indicators set for teachers, in a bid to improve the status of the university in the eyes of NAAC. Seminars attended, publications made, awards received, feed back from students, are some of the performance indicators but it is alleged that some teachers have been awarded very high marks though their performance, particularly their publications are of not good standards and the journals in which they are published are not scientific in nature. Even an article published in a non-scientific journal or an award received from a local organisation has earned marks for some teachers. An award for a university teacher is considered to be as a performance indicators.

NAAC wants real feed back

One important task for the AU administration in its bid to impress the Peer Team is securing a good feedback from the students about their teachers. Unlike in the past when a group of students gathered to give opinion (positive of course) the Peer Team will now meet the students at random during its visit to the departments and elicit their opinion.

This new method has been followed in Osmania University and AU has to get ready to face this real litmus test.
