Conference on globalisation
Winners: The students of M. S. S. Wakf Board College with their shield.
The Department of Commerce of Sourashtra College organised a one-day national conference on ‘Globalisation: prospects and problems’ recently. In his inaugural address, the college secretary, S.V.S. Shivnath, said that globalisation had paved way for economic growth and at the same time the Government must continue its welfare programmes for uplifting the poor.
S. Thiagarajan, coordinator of the conference, emphasised that globalisation must be practised with a human touch and insisted that the Government should play a crucial role in the field of higher education and health care services.
D. Irudhayarajan, Director, Centre for Development Studies, Kerala, voiced his concern that globalisation had resulted in migration of workers that affected the social system in general and family in particular.
R. Sasikumar from Bangalore University and V. B. Athreya, economist, also spoke.
Ninety four papers were presented on various topics related to globalisation and its impact on industry, agriculture, health and society, culture, environment and status of women. Around 180 participants from various colleges in Tamil Nadu and neighbouring States attended the conference.
The Department of Microbiology conducted MICZAUBER- 2K8, a State-level intercollegiate students’ meet. M. Hussain Munavar, Head of molecular biology, School of Biological Sciences, Madurai Kamaraj University, spoke on ‘Will nano technology pave way to cure cancer?’ The lecturer elucidated the possibilities of success in curing cancer by using genetically modified e. coli cells.
Various competitions like poster presentation, art from waste, facial painting, quiz and dumb charade were organised. The overall shield was bagged by the Microbiology Department of M. S. S. Wakf Board College.
The Principal, N. M. R. S. Chandirakanthan, inaugurated the programme.
