Focus on Zambia
The Belgaum-based KLE University will be exploring the possibilities of development of medical education and general higher education in Zambia soon. The idea cropped during a meeting of an Indian delegation consisting of businessmen and academicians led by Registrar of KLE University P.F. Kotur with Zambian Vice-President Rupiah Banda on March 12.
Dr.Kotur, who was in South Africa then to attend the International Conference of Anaesthesiologists, led the delegation and gave a courtesy call on Mr. Banda at Lusaka. The Zambian delegation, which had visited KLE University during December last, had invited Dr. Kotur to Zambia.
According to Dr. Kotur, the Zambian Vice-President has drawn up a plan for the development of education. Further, it was decided to sign a MoU with the University. Mr.Banda will be coming to India to hold discussions on the identified areas, besides considering the deputation of doctors to Zambia.
Site inspection
It has been also proposed to establish a Health Science University in Zambia. One of the objectives of the Indian delegation was to take up evaluation of this proposal and identify a suitable site for establishment of the university. The team visited some of the sites in Lusaka and Livingstone.
Dr. Kotur said the KLE University has been working with a vision to improve the quality of health services and medical education, besides encouraging exchange programmes and establishing tie-ups with reputed institutions in other countries for mutual benefit and progress. The growing links with Zambia is yet another step in that direction.
