Cognizant organises campus outreach programme
|
As part of its efforts to bridge the gap between what students learn at engineering colleges and what they are expected to know when they take up their first job, IT and BPO major Cognizant organised “TransITion 08”, a unique campus outreach programme recently in Bangalore.
The day-long inter-collegiate meet consisted of fun-filled learning sessions, on-the-spot project presentation contests and paper presentations. The winners bagged exciting prizes, which included trophies, I-Pods, gift vouchers, certificates and job offers from Cognizant.
Cognizant’s “TransITion” is the first and the only programme of its type to be held in the city. Over 200 students from 16 engineering colleges in and around Bangalore participated in the various contests. Faculty members, placement officers and principals of the colleges also attended the programme.
“TransITion is an important part of our campus outreach initiatives. It is a platform for youngsters to hone their skills, get an insight into the industry and most importantly prepare for the professional life ahead,” said Mohan Kalyan, Vice-President and Head of Bangalore Operations, Cognizant.
The contests that enabled students to bring out the best in them, showcase their innate potential and talents included Awe (a feisty general knowledge quiz that covered a plethora of topics), Panorama (a stall presentation contest where teams showcased their imagination and expertise), iTechSpeak (an innovative paper presentation contest) and Acumen (a spot competition of case study analysis).
Panel discussion
Another highlight of the meet was the panel discussion on ‘Doing big things early through innovation, excellence and leadership’. Suhas Gopinath, founder of Global Incs; Sadagopan, Founder Director of International Institute of Information Technology-Bangalore; and Vaidya Nathan, Global Innovation Leader, Cognizant, were the panel members.
The students were thrilled to hear Suhas Gopinath speak about how he made it big in the IT world by crossing numerous hurdles and how his assertiveness helped him become an entrepreneur.
While Vaidya Nathan threw colour light on social entrepreneurship, Prof. Sadagopan advised the youth to be patient and cited examples of companies that have become a sensation, which was the outcome of their patience.
Designers
Notably, TransITion was driven from concept to execution by students who joined Cognizant after graduating from engineering institutions a few years ago. Their understanding of what needs to be covered as part of college education and what their expectations were when they joined the industry helped Cognizant design this programme.
SDM College of Engineering, Dharwad, won ITechSpeak, while the runners-up were Bangalore Institute of Technology.
The University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering won Acumen, and Sir. M. Visvesvaraya Institute of Technology bagged the runners-up place.
While BMS College of Engineering was declared as winners of Panorama, JSS College of Technology came in second. RV College of Engineering and National Institute of Engineering, Mysore, were winners and runners-up respectively of Awe.
