Stella Maris principal to be honoured
Dr. Sr. Annamma Philip, principal of Stella Maris College, will be felicitated for her contribution to academia on April 2 at the college, at a function organised by the department of Chemistry. Students, alumnae, and colleagues from other institutions will participate.
The credo of the college has been to build character, sensitivity and awareness among its students and imbue them with the spirit to work for social transformation.
As principal, Dr. Annamma Philip guided the institution through several phases of growth. The college launched many academic programmes and set up modern facilities; socially-relevant programmes such as service learning and environmental education were started.
Stella Maris has played a key role in the launch of Madras Community College, an alternative to higher education. Dr. Annamma Philip has held many positions including that of vice-president of The International Federation of Catholic Universities (IFCU), France (1994-97), UGC delegate under The International Visitors Programme to study Community Colleges in USA (1995), and Member of the Syndicate, University of Madras, for two terms (1992-98). She served as chairperson, State Minorities Commission, Tamil Nadu (2001-04).
Dr. Annamma Philip, who is also head of PG department of Chemistry, lays down office this academic year as principal after 18 years of service in that capacity, according to Dr. Rukmani Srinivasan, Head, Department of Chemistry.
