The many education fairs that are being held over a month in Coimbatore are receiving a good response, both from the institutions and the students. There are old and new colleges as well as universities sharing space. In addition to these, there are a couple of career direction programmes.
For a large number of students, education fairs are the best source of information about colleges and courses. Though access to the Internet has made things a lot easier for students in selecting their area of study, a majority of them prefer going to educational fairs for additional information. Moreover, such fairs help students keep themselves up-to-date on the new courses introduced by colleges and their collaborations with foreign universities,
“All the information available online may not be authentic. Plus, fairs permit face-to-face interaction with the representatives of the colleges,” says Anmol Vij, a third-year B. Tech student, who visited many fairs before deciding on his course. “I made it a point to visit most of the educational fairs as they provided an overview of the courses, infrastructure available at the colleges and the financial perspective too,” he adds. According to him, these are what one should enquire about when visiting the stalls.
R. Keerthiga, a first-year BCA student agrees with Anmol on the usefulness of educational fairs. However, a few colleges try to lure students by assuring them of various facilities and fee discounts. Spot admissions too are offered by some. “They assure you a seat without even knowing your results,” she says and cautions students to look out for the authenticity of such admissions.
The institution heads feel that the exercise gives exposure to their college/university and a chance to exhibit their popular and new job-oriented courses. Along with the many college and course brochures, students get free career guides containing location and phone numbers of colleges.
J. Adhavraj, managing partner of Outreach, an event management company that organised an education fair, says: “Every year students have to go from college to college to get to know the course and fee details. Such expos bring representatives of many colleges under one roof so that students can prepare themselves before the results are out with the required information. Once the results are out they can directly go for admission without wasting any time.” The motivational lectures and seminars that are part of such fairs are value additions that enable the students to make wise choices; all under one roof and at no cost.
