The right choice?

After joining college, the course selected may not be inspiring
|
The new academic year will begin soon. And with it the yearly routine of classes, making new friends, getting to know your teachers etc. Once you are into college, it is time for fests and participation in activities and preparing for exams.
Some of you enjoy the course, get along with the new environment and look forward to two or more years in college. For some, there may be doubts about whether they made the right choice of course and college. Even those eager to get into a particular college or course start to wonder if they have made a grave mistake, after the first few days.
In most cases, such doubts and uncertainties are temporary and pass as you settle down and develop confidence, make friends and begin to have a more manageable routine. For a few lost ones, the doubts not only linger, they start increasing in intensity.
If you are one of those who feel that you have made a wrong choice and are losing interest and motivation, it is time to take stock and introspect. Keeping emotions aside, you need to think about what has gone wrong. Only then will you be able to take the right decision. There have been many cases wherein students have left a course and joined a new one on impulse only to find that they are just as miserable there.
Missing out
You have to think if your disappointment is due to the fact that you could not get the course of your choice, and the second best does not seem good enough. In that case you can explore whether you can join the chosen course next year, and what you need to do to ensure that you get in. Also look at the financial angle of the fees paid.
Keep in mind, though, that you can probably complete the course, get yourself a qualification, and then switch over to what you originally wanted to do. Another possibility is that you are just not able to connect with the subjects being taught. The portions are vast and seem difficult as well boring which keeps you wondering how and when you will catch up. In such a situation, get expert advice on whether your method of study is correct.
Do not be misled
After joining a particular course, you may realise that there is no ‘scope’ in it. People may scare you by saying that graduates of that field are not getting jobs, that there are no campus recruitments, and so on. Do not get misled by such talk. Every field has scope for those who excel in it. If you have chosen a field based on your interest and you have the aptitude and ability to perform well, you will certainly get remunerative jobs.
There might be situations that happen to put you off, but you might be unaware of them. Seek help from a trusted elder, a teacher who knows you well, or a counsellor. Go back into your past, and try to identify the root cause of your discomfort. Only then can you take a rational decision on what you should do.
There is nothing to regret if you have made one wrong decision. What you need to ensure is that you take the next decision carefully, so that you do not make another blunder. It does not matter even if you lose a year if you are headed towards a more meaningful and fulfilling life.
