Changing role of women discussed at seminar university roundup
Notwithstanding the various forms of oppression faced by women in the male-dominated society in the India, women are becoming more articulate. They are creating their own spaces in various roles in the society and economy.
And, they are also bringing out their innovative talents breaking the fortified institutions of patriarchy.
These were among the observations made by scholars at a seminar on ‘Privileging Women Agency in History: Work, Worship, Leisure and Pleasure organised by the Department of History, Osmania University here recently.
Collaborative research by historians, sociologists, anthropologists and scholars from other disciplines will be very efficacious in understanding various roles played by women in the history, observed Prof Vijaya Ramaswamy, Centre for Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in her keynote address.
Both intellectual constraints and external evidence would play a vital role in looking at women groups, she added.
K. Ramakrishna, Head, Department of History explained how women’s history is becoming more relevant to the present-day society.
Prof. Adapa Satyanarayana said the seminar was intended to the discuss socio-economic history of the Telangana and the Deccan with special emphasis on gender issues, subordinate groups and cultural movements.
About 36 research papers were presented from across the country in the seminar.
The research papers included quantitative approach to the study of women by Prof Vishweshwar Rao, concept of love and pleasure by Prof I Thirumali.

In view of the byelections on May 29, some changes have been made in the entrance test dates of KUCET 2008 scheduled to be held from May 26, said Kakatiya University Director of admissions Prof. P.Indrasena Reddy.
M.Sc. Zoology entrance test scheduled for 29.5.2008 (11 a.m. to 12.30 p.m.) will now be held on 30.5.2008 ( 2.30 p.m. to 4.00 p.m.), M.A. Economics (29.5.2008) on 1.6.2008 (11 to 12.30p.m.), MTM (29.5.2008) on 2.6.2008 (11 to 12.30p.m.), M.Sc. Chemistry (1.6.2008) on 30.5.2008 (11 to 12.30p.m.), M.Sc. Botany (30.5.2008) on 2.6.2008 (11 to 12.30p.m.).
Students are informed to make a note of the mentioned above changes.
There is no change in the entrance dates of other remaining subjects, he said.
So far 39,009 applications have been received for 5625 seats in different disciplines, he added.
Students can apply till 21st May 2008 with a late fee of Rs. 1,000/-, Prof. Indrasena Reddy said.
