Means-cum-merit scholarship

The Central Government will introduce national means-cum-merit-scholarship during the 11th Five-Year Plan to award scholarship to meritorious students of economically weaker sections.

This is to check their dropping out at 8th class and to encourage them to continue in the secondary stage up to Intermediate.

The Government will incur an expenditure of Rs.3004.04 crore during the plan.

Each year at least one lakh scholarships of Rs. 6,000 per annum would be awarded to students at the beginning of 9th class and would be continued till Intermediate. Only students whose parental income from all sources is not more than Rs.1.5 lakh will be eligible to avail of the scholarship. Further the scholarship is meant for student studying in government, local body and Government aided schools.

Test

To select the candidates, a selection test would be held at the State level for the students of 8th class.

This will be conducted along with the first stage selection test of the National Talent Search Examination conducted by the State Governments under guidance of NCERT.
