DRESS CODE: Clothes reveal the cultural and economic differences between two individuals.
GMRIT: A dress reveals a personality. Clothes make such an impact on others that it can make or mar a positive opinion. But they also reveal the cultural and economic differences between two individuals. The disparity is rather glaring when the rich and poor meet.
This was perhaps the underlying reason for the invention of school uniform. It closes the gap between the poor and rich and plugs the scope for discrimination. Perhaps, we need to carry the uniform system in colleges too. Mandatory college uniforms would make colleges not only a better place, but a better learning environment. Uniforms give a sense of belongingness and prevent dress code problems. Uniforms are also very cost effective. Some students’ feel they have to have the expensive designer clothes to fit in and be “cool”. Uniforms would allow everyone to wear the same thing and help everyone fit in. Not only would it help students fit in but it would help students concentrate on college not what they are wearing. Colleges have reported problems with gang colours and dress codes. There have been reports of problems of students being beat up for their clothes. Uniforms would prevent gang colour problems. Today’s designer clothes are expensive. So uniforms reduce the burden on economically backward students. Realising the importance of uniform many software consultancies introduced dress code for the employees. Wearing uniform in the colleges enrich the strategies like team work, which are the pre-requisites for dynamic professionals. Any college campus with students in uniform gives a pleasant scenario. Uniforms help feel comfortable in college and it would be one less thing students and parents have to worry about.
