COMMUNITY SERVICE:NSS volunteers of NGP Arts and Science College clearing and widening the road in one of the villages where they held a special camp.

The Budding Biochemists Association of the Department of Biochemistry of Sree Narayana Guru College organised an inter-collegiate and inter-school bio-science fest, “Pulse *08” recently. Chief guest Rajeswari Sivaraj, Head, Department of Biotechnology, Karpagam Arts and Science College, spoke on the recent advances in bio-sciences and encouraged students to fulfil the dreams of former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

The placement cell of the Rathinam College of Arts and Science organised a job mela recently. Information Technology and other companies participated to recruit for the posts of marketing specialists. As many as 36 candidates were selected in the mela.

The NSS units of NGP Arts and Science College conducted a 10-day special camp in Marudhamalai, Erularpatti and Navavur villages. A free medical camp for tribals was conducted. Besides this, the volunteers cleaned up the villages, arranged for special talks and lectures by specialists in the field of medicine, languages and general health.

Sankara College of Science and Commerce organised its annual day celebrations recently. Mayor R. Venkatachalam was the chief guest. He complimented the colleges on its infrastructure facilities and appealed to the students to make use of them to succeed in life. He also distributed prizes to winners.

ICFAI National College launched a four-month training programme – summer internship programme. As many as 260 students from Coimbatore, Tirupur, Pollachi and Erode centres are pursuing the programme in Coimbatore at some banks and insurance companies. Inaugurating the programme, chief guest Munir Alam, Zonal Manager, Bank of India, welcomed the programme and encouraged students to bring out their best in the course of such internships.

A seminar on “Career and Opportunities in Aerospace Industry” was held at the Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya College of Arts and Science. A.M. Palanisamy, Chairman, Aerospace Materials Private Limited inaugurated the seminar and urged students to develop the right attitude to reach altitudes in their careers. Other experts spoke on how to become an aeronautical engineer, helicopter technology and overview of opportunities and challenges in HAL.

The annual day of Coimbatore Institute of Technology and CIT sandwich Polytechnic College was organised jointly recently. Y. Venkateswara Rao, Director, National Institute of Technology, Warangal, was the chief guest. He lauded the strength of girl students in both the institutions. S.R.K. Prasad, Director of CIT and Principal R. Prabhakar spoke.

The students of Social Work of the Bharathiar University took a socio-economic survey of the Kondampatti village. The rural camp was held at the village for three days. Various camps for health, eye, etc., were held for the villages, in collaboration with the Kovai Medical Center and Hospital and Lotus Eye Hospital. A. Sasi Kumar, Assistant Commissioner, Income Tax, Business Circle, Coimbatore, distributed prizes to winners of the competitions held in the village.

The Mechanical Engineering Department of V.L.B. Janakiammal College of Engineering and Technology organised a workshop on “Recent Advances in Automotive Technology” recently. R. Venugopal, Additional Director, Combat Vehicle Research and Development Establishment, Chennai, spoke on the technological achievements in the development of combat vehicles. He highlighted the lead role played by CVRDE in the development of tanks, light combat aircraft and missile prog rammes such as Trishul, Akash and Nag.

The Society of Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers Students Forum was inaugurated at the Maharaja Prithvi Engineering College recently by R. Senthil Raju, Assistant Project Manager, Cognizant Technology Solutions, Coimbatore.

The Department of Bio-informatics of G.R. Damodaran College of Science organised a one-day national symposium on “Technology in Life Sciences” GENBIX ’08. Over 100 students and research scholars participated in events like paper presentations, poster presentations, quiz and Just-a-minute.

The NSS units of Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College conducted special camps at Tholampalayam and Osur villages. Volunteers conducted socio-economic survey, sports for school children, free eye camp, free dental camp, free general health check-up and free veterinary camps.

The health centre of the PSG Institute of Medical Sciences and Research organised a mass awareness rally focussing on the theme of biodiversity conservation. The rally passed through the main streets of Vedappati, Kurumbapalayam and Vanniampalayam. R.R. Balasundaram, Secretary of RAAC and Chamber of Commerce, underlined the need for protecting the environment and Nature.

The School of Management of Sri Krishna College of Engineering and Technology organised a two-day training programme on spiritual intelligence for the management students. Chief guest K.V. Kumar, General Manager – HR, Lakshmi Machine works, said that spirituality at the workplace was gaining momentum all over the world. The training combined simple and effective techniques and taught students methods to enhance academic performance.
