‘English no longer a language confined to classrooms’

The English Literary Association “Literati” of the SNMV College of Arts and Science was inaugurated recently by R. Palanivel, Head, Department of English and Foreign Languages, Bharathiar University. He said English was no longer a language confined to classrooms and examinations. It was required for IT, Mathematics as well for using the computer. He urged students to eliminate the fear of making mistakes while speaking the language.
The Department of Women’s Studies of Bharathiar University organised an awareness programme on nutrition for women SHG members at Vadavalli. Amirthavalli, President of Vadavalli Panchayat Union, presided over the function. Angeline Esthar Preethi and Praba, faculty of the Department of Food and Nutrition, R.V.S. College conducted a live demonstration for the preparation of three nutritious recipes such as grape squash, fruit salad and nutritious mix of cereals. They counselled the women about their nutritional requirement after calculating their BMI (Body Mass Index) individually and gave a sample menu.
Karunya University has launched two major community-based projects namely Project Water and Project Clean. These projects have been launched with an objective to enhance health and hygiene in those living near the university. Besides providing clean water, the project will also help the villagers manage their waste in a gainful way by converting it into biogas or vermicompost. The projects were launched by Chancellor Paul Dhinakaran at a function where more than 300 villagers participated.
The first year students of Kumaraguru College of Technology were given a welcome on the first day. N. Mahalingam, Chairman, Sakthi Groups, presided. T. Rajaram, former Professor, SVN College, Madurai, who was the chief guest urged the students to change the present employment scenario to make it viable for even people from Western countries to seek employment here.
The Association of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of the Coimbatore Institute of Engineering and Information Technology was inaugurated recently by K.R. Chandran, professor, Department of IT, PSG College of Technology. He urged the students to take part in extracurricular activities. He said such activities would help them in their placement.

The club activities of Avinashilingam University for Women were inaugurated by C. Sylendra Babu, Inspector General of Police. He spoke to the students on “Prospects in the Indian Civil Services”.
The Department of B. Com. (e-commerce) of the PSGR Krishnammal College for Women organised a State-level seminar on “Impact of IT in the Service Sector”. P. Thiruvenkatasamy, Manager, IT, ELGI Balakrishnan and Bros. spoke to the students on the performance of the IT and banking sectors. He said IT applications were found in education, Indian Railways, advertising, health care, etc.
The Association of the Department of Computer Applications of the Hindusthan College of Engineering and Technology was inaugurated recently by R. Lakshmi Narayanan, HR and Soft Skill trainer of ICFAI National College, Erode. He interacted with students on personality development.
The Rotaract Club of SNR Sons College held a district-level event called “Leaders First”. The session dealt with leadership development and how to be a creative manager. There were ice-breaking sessions, interactive activities and team-building activities that enabled students to put forth their skills.
The Department of Chemistry (PG and Research) of the Kongunadu Arts and Science College organised a lecture on “Retrosynthetic Analysis”.
P. Shanmugam, Scientist-EI, Organic Chemistry Division, CLRI, Chennai, spoke on the topic, its definitions and working examples for beginners who wished to practice it. He said it was well suited for discovering different synthetic routes and comparing them in a logical way.
The Entrepreneurship Development Cell of the Dr. G.R. Damodaran College of Science organised a faculty development programme in “Promoting Entrepreneurship in Educational Institutions”. Sujit Banerjee, Director, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, spoke on creating an entrepreneurial ecosystem in educational institutions. He gave an overview on the various agencies that helped entrepreneurship development.
Final year MBA students of Park’s College underwent a short-term corporate training programme organised by Bharti Axa Life Insurance Company. Certificates of appreciation were handed over to outstanding students. The best student was made an offer of appointment by the company.
The Department of Zoology of the Bharathiar University organised a seminar on “Recent Trends in Aquaculture Practices towards Technological Empowerment” recently. L. Kannan, Vice-Chancellor of Thiruvalluvar University, Vellore, spoke to the students on the problems faced by the aquaculture field and how to find solutions. He appealed to the students to follow friendly aquaculture practices. G. Samarasam, Managing Director, Aqua Nova Industries, Chennai, and Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam, spoke.
A summer school on Instructional Design and Delivery System (IDDS) was held at the Dr. Mahalingam College of Engineering and Technology. B.G. Barki, Director, National Institute of Technical Teachers’ Training and Research, highlighted on quality enhancement of teaching. He urged teachers to provide the students with a vast pool of knowledge to enable them compete in the world.
Nallamuthu Gounder Mahalingam College inked a Memorandum of Understanding with ICICI Bank to conduct the banking and financial services industry course through e-learning modules. The curriculum involves a blend of instructor led training, assignments and self paced e-learning and skill enhancement / simulated lab sessions.
The Department of Computer Technology of Sree Saraswathi Thyagaraja College organised a ten-day computer training programme for school students. They were trained after school hours by the resource persons from the college. Practical examinations were conducted after the training and certificates were issued.
G.V.G. Visalakshi College entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with ICICI Bank for organising a course on “Foundations of Banking”. The course content involved banking and its practical applications. It is aimed at enhancing the placement opportunities of students in the banking and financial services sector.
The Coimbatore Branch of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India conducted a seminar on “Opportunities for CA Students” for the students of Government Arts College. Students were briefed on the opportunities, salary and other benefits involved in the career of chartered accountants.
The Department of Commerce of the Vidyasagar College of Arts and Science organised a Guide Teachers’ Training Programme for school teachers in Pollachi and Udumalpet taluks. It was jointly organised by the Tamil Nadu Science Forum and NCSTC Network, New Delhi. Resource persons trained the teachers in doing projects relating to climate change and global warming that will be submitted at the district level and national level congress.
