A. Irudaya Arockiasamy, Head, Department of Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology, St. Joseph’s College, inaugurating the activities of Botany Association of National College in Tiruchi.

In association with Sutherland Global Services, the Training and Placement Cell of the Jayaram College of Engineering and Technology organised a three-day Faculty Development Programme recently.

The programme on ‘training of trainers for quality improvement in engineering education through improved teaching methodology’ was addressed by Shahjayan Syed, Senior Trainer, SGS, who explained the basic curriculum.

On the second day, each participant was asked to speak on a topic of choice for a few minutes. Problems in presentations were ironed out and the participants were given assistance in public speaking. The final day included mock interviews to provide first-hand experience to the participants.

At the Ad Zap session, participants were taught the basics of advertising using their skills with available material. There were over 25 participants from other colleges including Oxford Engineering College, Sri Angalamman College of Engineering and MAM College of Engineering.

The activities of the Commerce Association of the Kurinji College of Arts and Science in the city were inaugurated by the Reader and Head, Department of Commerce and Financial Studies, Bharathidasan University, M. Selvam. Speaking on the occasion, he detailed on the importance of Commerce as a subject of study in the context of globalisation, and listed the employment potential and career options for Commerce graduates. The Principal, K. Santhanam and the HOD of Commerce o f the college, M. N. Sivabalan offered felicitations.

The Emeritus Professor, Department of Physics, Bharathidasan University, P. Kaliannan inaugurated the activities of the Sir C. V. Raman Club of Physics of the Arignar Anna Government Arts College, Musiri. In his address, Dr. Kaliannan dwelt on the basic concepts of molecular biophysics, and explained how molecular biophysics was a combination of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

College Principal R. Padma emphasised the need to expose students to emerging fields. The HOD of Physics B. Revathi also addressed the student audience.

The Visiting Professor of Bharathidasan Institute of Management (BIM) N. Chandrasekaran inaugurated the activities of Mathematics Association of Saranathan Engineering College, by delivering a special address on ‘great mathematicians whose contributions to Mathematics made a breakthrough that changed history’.

Dr. Chandrasekaran spoke about 17 mathematicians right from Euclid. He added that the 18 th breathrough was made by Asker Zadeth with his fuzzy set theory which was now applied in various fields, including Computer Science. The Principal, Y. Venkataramani in his presidential address highlighted the role of mathematicians in different branches of engineering.

The activities of the Botany Association of the National College were inaugurated by the Head, Department of Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology, St. Joseph’s College, I. Arokiyasamy. He spoke on the principles and applications of Remote Sensing’ and explained its application in the field of Botany. The Principal K. Anbarasu presided and the HOD of Botany M. N. Abubacker offered felicitations.

At a meeting organised by the Department of Biotechnology of Srimad Andavan Arts and Science College, T. V. Koil, K. S. Vasudevan, Chief Scientist, Mediclone Biotech Private Limited, Chennai, delivered a special address on ‘Immunotechnology: status and prospects’. He highlighted the status of research in Immunotechnology in India and abroad. He explained about Immunotechnology, Immunoinformatics, and Insilico-Immunology. Dr. Vasudevan urged the students to keep abreast of the latest developments in the field of Biotechnology. The Principal K. Prema presided.

The NASSCOM in association with the Cognizant Technologies, Chennai and the Cauvery College for Women conducted a faculty development programme for Government College lecturers spread over four days. A total of 31 lecturers from different colleges from throughout the state took part in the programme, which was inaugurated by the secretary of the Cauvery College, K. Rengarajan.

Five faculties from Cognizant Technologies handled various sessions like communication skills and body language, time management, goal setting, interview skills and human resources.

Under the auspices of the Space and Sputnik (Chemistry) and Physics Associations of the Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College in Tiruchi city, a meeting was held at the college recently.

Delivering a lecture, noted Chronicler of the country’s Space Technology Mohan Sundara Rajan explained the technical and international implications of the accumulating debris in space due to the launch of hundreds of satellites and rockets in sp ace.

He suggested that ‘kicking’ satellites that have outlived their utility to a higher orbit or ‘draining’ the propellant after its use to avoid its explosion would go a long way in checking pollution in space. The Head of the Department of Physics M. Lalitha and the Reader in Chemistry V. Usha were among the speakers.

The Institute of Computer Applications, Christhu Raj College, organised a two-day national level symposium on GIGS – 2K8’ (Global Innovative and Governing System).

Inaugurating the event, the Director of the IT Park of the Bharathidasan University Gopinath Ganapathy explained the larger importance of Information Technology over other fields, and urged the students to improve their skills. College Chairman A. Aru nachalam presided. The Director of the Adakilamatha Institute of Computer Applications, Vallam, L. Nagarajan and the Principal, C. Thyagarajan offered felicitations.

Over 300 students from different college actively participated in the eight events – paper presentation, fallacy code blaster, mind master, sole out web maker, surprise event, unquistic play and so on. S. Nicholas of the Department of Computer Application of the NIT-T, delivered the valedictory address.
