Lecture on climate change

The Botany Department of Thiagarajar College organised a special lecture on ‘Impacts of climate change on biodiversity’ during the inauguration of Botany Association. K. Santhaguru, Head of the Department of Botany, in his presidential address highlighted the importance including biodiversity in curriculum at all levels. D. Kannan, vice-president of the association, welcomed the gathering. T. Sharmila Rani proposed a vote of thanks.

The chief guest, R. Mohanraj of Bharathidasan University, in his lecture, said that climate change and its impending risk on different ecosystem including man was the greatest threat today. Impact of climate change had already begun in different parts of the world. Episodes of drought and flood were increasing world wide. A sharp increase in carbon dioxide emission coupled with land use changes and deforestation were identified as the major drivers of climate change. To combat and mitigate climate change, forestry was one immediate option, he said.
