Students of Biotechnology and Commerce Departments of St. Joseph’s College launched a special programme of imparting training in tailoring at Goundampatti village recently to help rural women supplement family income.
The programme was organised under the aegis of Extension Department SHEPHERD. The training programme was inaugurated by the Director of Extension Department, Rev. M. Elias, in the presence of M. Shanmugam, correspondent, Bhagavathi Educdaitonal Institutions.
The programme was launched considering the plight of the villagers during lean seasons. A study on the economic condition was made by a group of students led by S. Saranya (final year Biotechnology) and R. Balachandar (final year Commerce). The coordinator of the Extension Department, P. Mani, explained the scope of employment opportunities in textile units.
Rev. Elias explained the various projects implemented by the students of the college in the adopted villages to improve the economic conditions of the locals. The Programme Officer, Jan Shikshan Sangthan, A. Sugumar, said that this certified training would enable the beneficiaries in getting easy bank loans.
P. Sangeetha, the master trainer, said that the four month-long training programme would comprise theory classes, practical training and record work.
M. Venkadesan of III B.Sc (Chemistry) and A. Anbu Kumar, I M. A. (Social Work), attached to the NSS unit I of Bishop Heber College, have bagged the State best NSS volunteers award.
The award was presented to them by the State NSS Cell, Chennai, in recognition of their outstanding service to the society and regular attendance in various camps.
The two along with other volunteers of the unit extended effective assistance in the construction of 1,437 toilets at four village panchayats in the district under the total sanitation programme, which enabled these panchayats to win the Union Government’s Nirmal Puraskar Award. The award — a certificate of appreciation and a cash prize of Rs. 2,000 — was a presented to them at a function held at Chennai recently.
The vice-chancellor of Bharathidasan University, M. Ponnavaikko; the principal of Bishop Heber College, M. Marcus Diepen Boominathan; Bharathidasan University NSS coordinator K. Kanagaraj, and NSS Programme Officer P. Rajkumar commended the achievement of Venkadesan and Anbu Kumar.
The Department of Arabic of Jamal Mohamed College organised a day-long national seminar on ‘Development of Arabic literature in India in the 20th century AD’.
The seminar was sponsored by the UGC. The Head of the Department of Arabic, English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad, and internationally renowned Arabic scholar, Syed Jahangir, in his inaugural address urged the students to be equally comp
etent in both Arabic and English languages, so that they would be much sought after by international companies to fill up the vacancies of translators, interpreters, data entry operators, etc.
College principal M. Sheik Mohamed, in his presidential address, explained the steps taken by the management in promoting the Arabic language and literature studies. T. C. Abdul Majeed, former HoD of Arabic of the college, said they study of Arabic reached a research level, thanks to the patronage extended by the management.
The principal released the books, From Makkah Al Makarrama to Madras (compiled by P. Nisar Ahamed, HoD of Arabic, Persian and Urdu, University of Madras), Essays in Arabic on different topics of Academic Significance and Collection of Arabic Poems over periods (both books authored by M. Abdul Khader, Reader in Arabic, Jamal Mohamed College). The treasurer of the College Management Committee, Khaleel Ahamed, received the first copy.
The Head of the Department of Arabic, New College, Chennai, Abdul Malik, delivered the valedictory address.
The 76th birthday of the Chancellor of Periyar Maniammai University, M. K. Veeramani, was celebrated as Science Development Day at Periyar Maniammai University, Thanjavur.
Presiding over the function, vice-chancellor N. Ramachandran stressed the importance of growing trees for a clean and green environment.
A total of 76 tree saplings were planted on the premises. Also, a blood donation camp was organised by the NSS wing of the university.
The vice-chancellor and the registrar pledged to donate their body and this was followed by a number of staff and students who took a similar pledge.
Later a meeting was organised by the Centre for Periyar Thoughts, when Rasagri Ko.Thankarasu, senior Dravidar Kazhaham activist, also announced that he would donate his body.
The foundation stone for the new blocks of AS-Salam College of Engineering and Technology run by the AS-Salam Trust at Aduthurai, Kumbakonam was laid last week. The college has started functioning this academic year with Mechanical, Civil, Electronic Communication and Computer Science courses. The Trust has come forward to provide free engineering education for bright poor students of the delta districts, its chairman M. J. A. Jamal Mohamed Ibrahim and secretary Shajahan said.
