Teachers seek UGC pay-scales
G. NARASIMHA RAO
Implementation of revised UGC pay-scales along with the other benefits to the teachers is one of the main issues on which the Andhra University Teachers Association is demanding since the pay-scales have been revived in 2006.
AUTA intensified its efforts in the last few months by brining up the issue with Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, Union Minister of State for HRD D. Purandareswari and all the important Ministers and officials whenever they visited the city.
It met Dr. Rajasekhara Reddy and Ms. Purandareswari during their latest visits and received a favourable response. This time around the university teachers in the State might feel more assured as the elections are round-the-corner and the issue has been pending for a long time.
The revised pay-scales are due from January 2006 and another benefit is enhancement of age of superannuation to 65 years. The Central Government would bear 80 per cent of the additional financial burden, informed AUTA secretary M. Prasada Rao.
Enhancement of pay-scale would attract and retain the best talent in the universities.
A big delegation of AU teachers met Dr. Reddy during his visit here on Saturday and was told that the issue was under serious and favourable consideration of the Government. Some days ago Ms. Purandareswari assured AUTA that she would try to impress the Government to implement the revised pay-scales.
